A Theology of Chaos

We live in a world where one billion people live on less than one dollar a day. Every single minute, fifteen children die from something related to poverty-starvation, dehydration, or a preventable disease. There are 200 million orphans in the world today, with 500,000 residing in foster homes in America. Every single day in America, fifty people die from a drunk driving accident, and three children die from child abuse. One third of all girls and one sixth of all boys in America are sexually abused before the age of eighteen. And yet the Bible tells us to believe that God is good. The question of God's goodness in the midst of evil and suffering has been labeled by theologians "the problem of suffering" or "the problem of evil." Though we may say that we want answers, oftentimes what we really want is rescue. Or, even better, redemption.
