Description

Jade Sylvan went on tour in France to perform poetry in 2012. When she came back, she wrote a star-crossed novelized memoir about love, death, and identity called Kissing Oscar Wilde, published by the indie poetry press Write Bloody in October, 2013.

The book follows Jade on tour as she decides to replace her younger self's lipstick kiss on Oscar Wilde's newly-cleaned grave. Jade is accompanied by her best friend, a photographer with whom she has a highly romantic creative friendship, who documents the trip with his camera. While the two artists scheme to navigate the whirlwind tour and return to Wilde's tomb in P re Lachaise, Sylvan decides to try to figure out her own fluid gender and sexual identity, and why she can't ever seem to love anyone the way she's seen in movies and read about in books.
Shortly after the pair arrive in France, they meet a captivating young woman - a beautiful, talented poet in a Humphrey Bogart hat whom Jade immediately falls for. As Jade follows this woman through the romantic European streets, she's struck by the realization that she may be more in love with stories than people, and that she has the power to author her own love story, just as she can author her own vocation, sexuality, and gender. The book paints a portrait of the artist as a conflicted queer trying to understand the mechanics of love in what Sylvan calls a "deconstruction of romance."
