Experiential Activities to Introduce Identity, Culture, Class, Gender, and Inclusion for Elementary and Middle-school-aged Participants

This box explores a series of topics to support young people in making sense of themselves, their peers, their communities, and the world around them. We believe that engaging youth in creating an intentional community requires an understanding of the ways our social systems have supported or disrupted the quality of relationships among diverse people. The activities in this box explore the ways our society has developed a set of conditions that have caused certain groups from select communities to feel more connected and empowered at the expense of others. For young people to make better choices about how they connect with others, they must understand subtle messages supporting an exclusive culture that are present in the media, in their family dynamics, and in social structures.
