Camp Sapo: A New Tribe Comes to Old Hunting Grounds

Deep in the Sacramento Canyon…in the southernmost mountains of New Mexico, a rag tag group of hunting nuts have been gathering each fall for the past 40-50 years. This “Tribe” is the latest group in a thousand year old tradition of hunters seeking prey here…in this arid area blessed by abundant wildlife. Remote & rugged, the land has witnessed a steady stream of visitors since man first came to this continent. For the past 12,000 years, the lives and experiences of prior occupants of this Canyon were passed on through oral traditions. Life, Death, Harvest, Failure, Tears, Death and Laughter….yes, laughter since time began, have been a part of existence here. Because the traditions and records of happenings in the Canyon were only said, and never written, those experiences, once alive and vibrant, rested silently in the quiet and dusty canyons….until Now. For the first time, a written record of life in the canyon has emerged. Though chronicling only a brief moment in the Canyon’s rich history, this record, a tale of a new tribe, identified as Camp Sapo, no doubt captures the essence of what has been witnessed there for millennia.
