How does Sébastien Castellion - a translator loathed by both Catholics and Protestants - create a particular language and style to translate the Bible for ordinary people? This book by Skupien Dekens - coeditor of Castelllion's Genesis (2003) - focuses on this question. Convinced that the Holy Spirit "gives all liberty of words and language to the speaker or the writer," Castellion tried to make use of all the possibilites offered by French syntax, still malleable in the Sixteenth Century, to fashion a language "understandable by idiots." After showing how the translator imagined his readers, this study positions this translation in the complex liguistic context of Sixteenth Century France. The analysis of French syntax allows one to understand how Castellion adapted his style and grammar in view of the ordinary people for whom he writes.
