Description
L'Art Modeste Sous les Bombes ("bombe" is used here as a pun for spraycan) is the Catalogue accompanying a seminal exhibition of graffiti and post graffiti held simultaneously in June 2007 at two museums in Sète (in the South of France), the MIAM (Musée International des Arts Modestes) founded and directed by Hervé di Rosa and the Musée Paul Valéry, and at the Centre d'Art Contemporain at the Abbaye d'Auberive, founded and directed by Jean Claude Volo and his family. Organized by Pascal Saumade, this exhibition presents the Speerstra Collection. More than anyone else and long before the current hype and economic speculation surrounding the street art movement, the Speerstra family have played an essential role in encouraging and supporting artists coming from the street art scene. Kitchen93 is particularly proud to have published this catalogue including works from 13 major "old school" writers and examples of work by the new generation who painted "in situ" at the MIAM and the Centre d'Art Contemporain at the Abbaye d'Auberive. This work also includes an essay and photo by Henry Chalfant a, and introduction by Pascal Saumade, a short description of techniques used by the artists,an essay by Philippe Dagen, and biographies of all the participants. An essential historic document concerning the artists' evolution from the street to the canvas.
