Description
As only a few natural compounds are available from traditional screening, there is a need for new and more efficient strategies to access structural diversity from nature. Therefore, at present, extracts from natural sources play the major role in drug discovery from nature. Microbial natural products still appear as the most promising source for drug identification. For more than 60 years, Actinomycetes and fungi have been the most fruitful group of organisms in antibiotic production and will likely to remain the main source for new antibiotics in the future. The terrestrial actinomycetes have been of extraordinary significance, as they are serving as unlimited source of novel bioactive metabolites. A more realistic strategy would be to isolate actinomycetes from a wide range of ecological niche; special interest would be on previously unexplored niches such as biodiversity hot spots like tropical forests and ever green forests. Microbial flora of Western Ghats in particular Actinomycetes offer a significant potential for the discovery of new compounds.Every effort in mapping this unique microbial diversity will in turn encourage the establishment of novel species of actinomycete.
