High-Plains States: The Impact Of Cattle Feeding Operations On Income AndEmployment

The Method of Study:222 counties from the SixHigh-Plains States of Colorado, Kansas,Nebraska,New Mexico,Oklahoma and Texas.County leveltwo digit SIC data were collected for the period OF 1977 to 2000.The RAS method was used to estimatemissing or withheld data.The agricultural services,manufacturing, wholesale trade,retail trade,Finance,Insurance and Real Estate(FIRE)services,construction, mining.The spatialrelationship Between counties was alsoconsidered.Findings and Conclusions:The mainvariables affecting Agricultural serviceemployment,were agricultural cash receipts andpersonal income.Manufacturing employment was shown to be affected bycrop income, fed cattle slaughter,Employment in thewholesale trade Sector was significantly affected bythe real value added by the basic and non-basicsectors in the County.Similarly a portion of incomeearned in Medium population counties was spent in theclosest large county or SMSA.Employment in thefinance,Insurance and Real Estate sectors was bestexplained by real value added in the trade and thepopulation of the county.Construction employment wasexplained by the real value added and the personalincome earned each county.
