ELT in Chinese Universities in the WTO Era: A Learner Perspective

Social and economic globalisation is having tremendous impacts on education. Since Chinaâ¿¿s accession to the WTO in 2001, China has reformed its higher education system in order to meet the challenges of globalisation. To correspond with this trend, the Chinese government has prioritised reforms in the teaching of English at various levels of the education system. In this context, the change of policy in the foreign language education sector becomes an issue of extensive concern. This book explores how the teaching of English in Chinaâ¿¿s universities is changing in response to the needs of graduates in an era of rapid globalisation. Based on policy documents analyses, classroom observations, and surveys and interviews regarding the national College English curricula, the finding was that the revised curriculum was much more popular with students and teachers, and will significantly contribute to improving graduatesâ¿¿ English proficiency if implementation challenges are overcome.
