Pierre Pauli was one of the initiators of the Biennales Internationales de la Tapisserie [International Tapestry Biennials] which would make Lausanne the capital of contemporary textile art, for a period of thirty years (1962-1995). The Pierre Pauli Association, founded as a tribute to this warm-hearted, extremely enthusiastic man, brought together an important set of works by well-known artists such as Magdalena Abakanowicz, Olga de Amaral, Jagoda Buic, Mariette Rousseau-Vermette, Elsi Giauque and Lenore Tawney.
Pierre Magnenat, former President of the Association, tells the story of the Collection and Erika Billeter, former Director of the Musée cantonal des Beau-Arts of Lausanne, places it within the context of the textile art revolution which took place from the Sixties to Eighties. Contemporary textile art collections are very rare in Europe, and the Pierre Pauli Association Collection is all the more interesting in that it brings together examples of the different trends: tapestries, reliefs, sculptures or installations.
The renewal was to be seen both in terms of form - works left the wall to occupy a three-dimensional space - and material (synthetic fibres, wood or paper). A collection that invites discovery.
