On Real-World Experiments with Wireless Multihop Networks: Design, Realization, and Analysis

In wireless multihop networks (WMNs), nodes cooperateto forward data packets for each other. Thisprinciple has a number of interesting applications,from disaster recovery scenarios over wireless sensornetworks to car-to-car communication. The systematicevaluation of such networks under real-worldconditions is difficult due to the distributed natureof such a network in combination with the complexeffects of electromagnetic wave propagation. In thisbook, we tackle the fundamental problems of thecontrol and analysis of such experiments. The bookcontains a guidebook of existing wireless multihopnetwork experimentation techniques and introduces theEXC testbed that allows researchers to create theirown testbed installation. Furthermore, it presentssolutions to the time synchronisation problem thatoccurs both during the runtime of an experiment aswell as during its analysis and explains how therepeatability of experimental runs can be examined.The book addresses readers that want toexperimentally evaluate a wireless multihop networkunder real-world conditions.
