English summary: The Syrian desert has for 50 years been the focus of a debate on overgrazing, environmental protection, and rural development. State and international institutions blame the mobile livestock herders who live and make their livelihood in the steppe for pollution and the progressive land degradation. In a concentrated action, 60 percent of the steppe is supposed to be afforested by grazing protection reserves. This has far-reaching consequences for Syrian pastoral nomads. Large areas of the steppe will for them become no-go areas. They will have to travel around these areas, may not set up camp there, and will lose control over the decision of when they can graze the re-grown resources. The growing pressure on the few remaining free steppe areas leads to conflicts and economic crises. What impact do the partially contradictory interventions have on the daily life and the living environment of Syrian pastoral nomads?
