Nanoscale Interactions and Their Applications: Essays in Honour of Ian McCarthy 2007

This book contains a series of essays that honour the many and varied contributions of Professor I. E. McCarthy to science. One of Ian McCarthy s enduring contributions to the scientific community was the training and mentoring of his many postgraduate students and postdoctoral fellows, and many of them are represented in this book. While Ian McCarthy was certainly a theoretical physicist, he worked closely for many years with Professor Erich Weigold as indicated in the Foreword of this book. As a consequence Ian developed an abiding interest in and understanding of experimental science. Hence the varied nature of the theoretical and experimental contributions to this volume is simply a reflection of Ian McCarthy s many interests. One of the very nice things about the contributions to this book is that many of them indicate how relevant and topical Ian s work remains today.
