Description
"Love in the Shadow of Death" is the true story of two prisoners from the Auschwitz Death Camp - Mala Zimetbaum, a Jewish woman, and Edward Gali?ski, a Polish man. Mala, thanks to her knowledge of several languages and engaging personality, was made a messenger (Läuferin) in the women's camp and was allowed to travel through the camp more freely than other prisoners. Edek, who was brought in the first transport of Polish political prisoners to Auschwitz I, was transferred to the maintenance work unit in Auschwitz II-Birkenau (death camp). This is where he met and fell in love with Mala Zimetbaum. This is the story of the love that these two individuals developed for one another, their unsuccessful escape, and their tragic fate in the camp. This illustrated history book shows the complicated relationship between prisoners, the functionary prisoners (Kapos), and the members of the SS guard garrison within Auschwitz in a new and non-stereotypical way, showing the human side of the this tragedy. "Episodes from Auschwitz" is a series of 'comic book' format illistrated history books, fully endorsed by the Directors of the Auschwitz Birkenau State Museum and former prisoners, that focus on the individual people that lived through or were murdered at the Auschwitz Death Camps - where out of the 1.3 million deported there, 1.1 million were murdered. Each book in the series includes: an introduction that details what was happening during WWII while the events in the Episode took place, illustrations depicting the people and places in the camps as accurately as possible, a glossary of terms, and a concluding article by Adam Cyra, PhD, who is a researcher and scholar at the Auschwitz Birkenau State Museum.
