Description

This book, compiled in 1944, is a collection of the stories told by Catholic priests who suffered alongside the Jews in the concentration camps throughout Europe during World War II. This remarkable book was compiled by a Roman Catholic Czech priest who was imprisoned for many years in Dachau concentration camp. It was first published in Czech in 1946. The English translation was published in 1994. The book is divided into two parts. The first part is 285 pages long. It is composed of over fifty accounts written by survivors about different aspects of the life of the approximately 2,670 Catholic priests (from 24 countries) who passed through what was the largest community, and the largest cemetery, of Catholic priests in the world. The second part, almost 300 pages long, is a list of the priests with basic facts about their imprisonment. Many priests who were in Nazi concentration camps (Dachau, Buchenwald, Mauthausen, Gusen, Sachsenhausen, Auschwitz, Orangienburg, Bergen-Belsen, etc.) have written their memoirs, but almost none are available English. This means that few readers of English know about the persecution of priests, Poles especially, during Hitler's Third Reich. This book is a must for people who wish to be informed about it. This book is principally about the imprisonment of non-German and Austrian priests.
