Description

Eduardo Corrales was born on February 5, 1946 in the streets of Perdón in Ubrique. The name of this place located between the neighboring Sister Villages is the Pig´s Pit, because within its fields pigs were raised. In 1492, around the time of the expulsion of the jews a few women got lost and established a settlement there which was later named “Punta Mala”, although they did not even cooperate in the construction of the chapel located in the mountain right by them. Unfortunately no documents proving this genealogy or assertions are left, because during the "Glorious Revolution" all the files that reference the Jewish origin of its inhabitants, including the files of the ancestors of the author, were ordered to be burned. There is particularly strange memory that has been imprinted in the author´s memories, never seen anywhere else in Andalucia: behind the windows of most homes, or by the doors –always open- sausages were hung indicating that the people in the household ate pork. The poor would hang lower quality sausages. The rich would proudly display their ham legs. Everybody did it, but nobody was aware of the origin of the custom. Endemic malaria was present in the village until the early twentieth century. The place had several streams with natural can growths (these are channeled nowadays) and so mosquitoes proliferated. The genetic disease that protects humans against malaria was popular in the town, perhaps because of a sort of natural selection. The place is known for being industrious and driven by commerce, with leather goods factories and former textile operations, but its people have a very different mentality and personality from what you can find in the region around it. From a political standpoint, the Ubriqueños are liberals and anarchists, both from the right and the left, respectively, although they are presented as conservatives and marxists. It was in this environment into which the author was born and raised, whose only element he cannot understand is the veneration of the image of the Virgen de los Remedios, worshipped by the left and the right by believers and non-believers alike as Tyrians and Trojans. She is a symbol of the town and commands a respect that can be considered a sociological phenomenon The author's father was Jose Corrales Romero, a leather manufacturer who also manufactured blankets and luggage, and went through many life altering events which affected his demeanor on life and by extension that of the author and his brothers. His mother Maria Luisa Garcia Piñero, a complete partner in all things of life, who worked in tandem and shared the same strong character. The author is the youngest of four children, three boys and a girl, and clearly remembers as if it was yesterday getting up and finding the house full of family, the mother said her brother Luis, who slept on a bench had left. Never could understand that ... how that someone could just leave and not return. In the evenings he waited for the north star, which he was told was his brother, but still did not return. He also went to the birth of the Rodezno springs, where the water rushed with great strength and where they had played together many times. He would scream his name, and still he did not return. He heard voices: "That child is crazy, is stupid, do you want to die like your brother, will you go with him? " It didn´t matter whether he called or not, waited or not. He never came back. Rage took over and he swore "I do not care if it is the way things have to be or that you are with Jesus ... you're gone, you have forsaken me and I will never forgive you." Time passed by. He attended high school in Jerez and the university in Seville and Madrid where he obtained a degree in Pharmacy while also attending UNED (a mail-in school) to study Law, because his brother Luis wanted to be a lawyer. He continued his life, fell in love and married Paquita Pecino, a national teacher who blessed...
