Since the international project to catalogue and describe the surviving examples of ancient Greek vases in world collections started some 70 years ago, many volumes have been published in the series Corpus Vasorum Antiquorum. The information in these volumes has not only increased our knowledge and appreciation of Greek ceramic art, but offers a reliable base for the systematic dating of Greek pottery fragments and thus of archaeological sites. The Rijksmuseum van Oudheden in Leiden holds the most important collection of Graeco-Roman vases in the Netherlands. This fourth descriptive volume of the Leiden corpus examines its Attic red-figure and Attic black vases. It is richly illustrated with high-quality black-and-white plates on separate 25 x 35 cm. cards and cross-sections and profiles of the vases discussed. Full indexes of inventory numbers, painters, groups and classes, and a concordance of the relationship between CVA inventory numbers and those of earlier catalogues make this work a valuable research tool.
