General Guidelines for Using Data on International Air-Passenger Traffic for Tourism Analysis

IATA and the UNWTO have worked together to compile this report in order to helpexplain to a technical audience how useful information generated by internationalair passenger traffic can be for the purpose of analysing tourism. This type of datacan be used to complement passenger arrival numbers with basic characteristicssuch as country of residence, visitor typology, purpose of trip, main form ofaccommodation used and main destination. In addition, this information can beused to help gauge the size and behaviour of the main tourist-generatingmarkets. This information is derived from administrative controls and themaintenance of comprehensive records of flight arrivals and departures.
