An American movie star, in Istanbul for a major film production, is found dead, his throat slashed. Everett and Lily Blum, an American couple living on one of Istanbul's Princes' Islands, find themselves caught up in the murder investigation. Along the way, they run into characters from Goodman's first novel, Sweet Confusion on the Princes' Islands (Adali/Islander Editions, 2005), plus Turkish and American filmmakers, schoolboys performing Oedipus Rex, a Pickwickian private detective and the mysterious Madame Latif. The reader is also introduced to some of Everett's arcane but fascinating hobbyhorses, from alchemy to Aeolian harps, from Galileo's theories to the paintings of Vermeer.
