Each chapter begins with an Introduction to the department/service and a summary of inter and intra-departmental relationships, followed by populated 1:20 drawings. For example, the Medical Laboratory chapter includes detailed populated drawings of phlebotomy, central processing, hematology, clinical chemistry, blood donation, donor screening, grouping & cross matching, microbiology, media prep, glass washing, histology, paraffin storage, immunology & serology and microscopy labs. The 1:20 drawings indicate the minimum space and dimensional requirements for equipment and furniture planning, as required for adequate circulation, space and utility requirements. Each drawing has an equipment list of the major items required for the room to be functional.
This book is the cumulative compilation of technical experiences and field feedback that Universal Hospital Services in Amman, Jordan has accrued over the past twenty years. It is designed to serve as guide for architects and hospital planners. It is not a how to, but rather a visual starting point for dialogue with healthcare providers about how they work and how they might deliver better health care in the future. Medical equipment technology is constantly evolving and this book provides a current basis for architects and planners to create physical spaces for health care services that assist healthcare providers in delivering the best possible care to their patients.
