Newspapers in Zimbabwe

The author was bom on 28 January, 1949 at Sipepa in the District of Tsholotsho in Zimbabwe. He is married with seven children. He is a published Ndebele and English writer of plays, short stories, cartoons, books, articles and letters on politics, philosophy and economy. He is currently the High Commissioner of Zimbabwe in Zambia. * * * In considering the extent to which newspapers in Zimbabwe are contributing towards development and towards the creation of the New World Information and Communication Order (NWICO), and what interest they serve, this study limits itself to the content and treatment of stories and other material over a period of one week in two daily and two weekly newspapers. In particular, the study looks into what subjects predominate in newspapers in Zimbabwe, and what the sources of stories are. Are they subjects that concern the interests of the majority or those of only a privileged few? What determines the choice of these subjects? What or who are the sources of these stories? Which news agencies are used, foreign or local? At the time the book was first written in 1986, it was the first one of its kind in Zimbabwe, and one of the very few on the subject written by an African in the whole of Africa. Indeed, it is still one of a few of its kind in Africa. The book is useful to government policy makers, parliamentarians, lectures and students of journalism, journalism colleges and courses, and the newspaper industry in general.
