Description
As the 1920s drew to a close, Georges Hugnet became a member of Stein's inner circle. In March 1928, Hugnet, Virgil Thomson, and Kristians tonny appeared at 27, rue de Fleurus bearing a gift for Gertrude. Hugnet had written the words, Thomson had set them to music, and Tonny had drawn a cover on silver paper. They called the song "Le Berceau de Gertrude Stein, ou le mystère de la rue de Fleurus," and its joyous, silly spirit embodied their familiar affection and ability to tease one another. Six months later, Stein wrote a portrait of Hugnet that concluded, "George is in our ring".
