Confined in the beginning to the Northern Provinces, this primitive race did not begin really to expand until under the Ts'in dynasty, 249 B.C. Under the Han g dynasty, 206B.C.-203 A.D., it occupied a large portion of the present Eighteen Provinces, except the coast-region of Chekiang flff f£, Fokien g £, and Kwangtung J Jfc. The native tribes were also numerous and inhabited the S. and S. W. They were called Veins H % (barbarians), and have several branches still extant: the Sifans g $ in the W. of Szechw'an Q )l; the Mantae £-or Lotos ijjF Jj$f in the S. W. of the same Province and in Yunnan J jf; and the Miaotze J-f inhabiting Kweichow j jHi Kwangsi JH f and Kwangtung Hf )(( («ee p. 4, and below, p. 342). These aborigines are sometimes called the prechineae raow, because they occupied the country previous to the coming of the Chinese. The prechinesc races, thoroughly homogeneous and prosperous, once formed powerful states along the Yangtze jg f valley. Among them, we may mention the Wu kingdom. (1122-473 B.C.), which comprised in the days of its splendour the present Provinces of Kiangsu ££ £, Nganhwei £ % and North Kiangsi frig; the Cft'« jg? kingdom (1122-223 B.C.), which occupied Hukwang $j JS( (actual Hupeh and Hunan), and parts of Honan jpf jfj and Kiangsu £r_ jg£, and attempted constantly to annex North Kiangsi f. §, which owed allegiance to the Wu kingdom; the Sfcua jjg kingdom (A.D. 302-347), which lay in Central and Southern Szechw'an pq Jl, and in Southern Hupeh $ 4t; the Yueh %£ kingdom (2057?-334 B.C.), which comprised actual Chekiang $f il.
