PREFACE Brick is one of the oldest of our modern building materials. It was used extensively in many parts of the world long before the present methods of structural design and stress analysis were developed and, consequently, many common practices in design and construction methods are the results of long usage rather than of theoretical analyses. In ancient times, much of this knowledge was passed on from one generation of craftsmen to the next by word of mouth, and this may be the reason that the volume of literature devoted to brick masonry is small as compared to the writings on comparable types of construction.
