With this view, he has spared no expense, and theE ditor has exerted his brst efforts, that theW jrk may be both complete and accurate. In theE nglish and Latin part, theE ditor was to retain the best Latin words and expressions ;but to exclu le all which he might judge superfluous or inappropriate At first siglit, the last appeared easy, but was found oftefi difficult. It fre(iuently re quired much considerati nbefore a choice could be made of the words to be retain ed, and those that would fall tf) be blotted cut. In several instances, many suitable words or expressions were added, for which the FM itor is, of course, responsible Abridgment formed an essential part of the plan, yet it was not intended to suppress any thing which, to the young scholar, was of im|)ortance. Studying })articularly the interest of the latter, and trusting to the liberality of the Proprietor, theE ditor has allowed this pan of theW ork to remain considerably more extended than was either wished or anticipated. As lie proceeded, the duty required deeper thought and more anxious consideration, than would have been previously imagined. Of the explanations, many were nearly synonymous, others did not depend on the proper meaning of the word under discussion, but on the other terms with which it was conjoined in a particular sentence
