From the author: We report an instance of interspecific adoption of Black-winged Stilt (Himantopus himantopus) chicks by Common Terns (Sterna hirundo), two species that nest in similar habitats but differ substantially in their behavior and diets. This is the first report of adoption between these two species. Received 2 November 2001, accepted 30 June 2002.
