From the supplier: Many networking hardware and software products are available for Macintosh computers, and choosing among them requires that buyers understand their applications and objectives as well as product functions and performance characteristics. Local Area Networks (LANs) can deliver data between computers from ten to 1,000 times faster than modem connections over telephone lines, and an overview of the more popular Macintosh LAN networking technology in educational institutions is presented. LocalTalk-PhoneNet and the more-expensive-but-faster Ethernet are widely used for physical connection and signal transmission, while AppleTalk and TCP-IP are the most commonly used network protocols. Several applications for Macintosh networking in education and how they affect the choice of network technology are addressed, and networks in use at various colleges and universities are described.
