From the supplier: The House of Representatives and the Senate are considering changes to the tax code affecting insurance agencies and brokerages. Depreciation of intangible assets, such as brokers' customer lists, was banned in 1989. Congress has bills changing prospective intangible amortization periods to 14 years in the House bill and 16 years in the Senate version, which also would allow a 75% depreciation for assets affected by the 1989 ban. In addition, the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants is proposing requiring agents and brokers to account for policy sales up front, not when the premiums are collected.
