From the supplier: The periodical 'The Liberal,' which was published by Lord Byron and Leigh Hunt between 1822 and 1823, represents a shift in the usage of the term 'liberal' in English. The term originally referred to the behavior of gentlemen, and could mean either generosity or licentiousness. Early in the 19th century, however, the term began to take on political connotations, through contact with revolutionary movements in Spain and Italy. Through his experience in publishing 'The Liberal,' Byron came to recognize the defects in the earlier liberal ideal of 'noblesse oblige' and helped to define the new ideal of liberalism through his participation in the Greek cause.
