From the supplier: Angela Carter's 1972 novel 'The Infernal Desire Machines of Dr. Hoffman' is pessimistic in that it does not offer an alternative to the tyranny of Reason because the author distrusts the fascism of Dr. Hoffman's revolutionary eroticism. In subsequent books such as 'The Sadeian Woman,' Carter offered a world of sexually liberated women. However, in the 'Desire Machines' she expresses her problems with male-controlled and defined sexuality without offering an alternative.
