From the supplier: Public markets and arcades have many similarities. Although they are distinct from each other, both are historic retailing properties that provide a sense of community that is so elusive in major American cities. Both were designed such that they are easily accessible to residents and workers, and provide a well-lighted and clear space to house retail establishments. Public markets and arcades also face the same challenges when it comes to achieving the best tenant mix. To reach this goal, they limit some categories of tenants, bring together mutually supportive retailers, and woo 'must-have' retailers to fill a void. Even the marketing efforts for the two shopping places use the same approaches. Both public markets and arcades use customer surveys, community newspaper advertising, and individual-tenant and full-market handbills. Finally, both continue to survive because of the support and patronage of the community they serve.
