From the supplier: Software re-engineering is not the panacea that many information technology (IT) specialists think it is. This latest fad in IT is based on the notion that existing business software applications can be redesigned and redeveloped to better fit with business needs. However, this ignores the fact that re-engineering software that was designed using old methods is nearly impossible. Moreover, the original software designers are themselves plunging into the new client-server and object-oriented technology. Implementing and adjusting to other modern management practices are more important than software re-engineering per se. These goals include flatter organizations, customer orientation, increased flexibility and business partnering. More importantly, re-engineering the IT system could yield better returns than focusing on software alone. Guidelines for IT re-engineering and outsourcing are provided.
