From the author: Hoffmann-La Roche, like many pharmaceutical companies, is challenged competitively to improve productivity, improve costs, sustain and grow revenues, and to increase its effectiveness in developing and managing human resources. As a step, the company launched a process of repositioning the function to fill a larger role in leading and supporting strategic change. This article describes this repositioning process and the results achieved having a strategic business impact. Prior to heading the human resource function, Mr. Rubino held senior management responsibilities in sales and marketing. The author acknowledges the assistance of Dr. James W. Walker in writing this article and his role in facilitating the human resource management team during the positioning process.
