From the supplier: A number of factors are transforming the electric power industry. The introduction of new generation, information and communications technologies and the entry of non-utility organizations into the market are just two of the variables that are creating an impact on the power sector. Aside from these, the introduction of regulatory reform proposals are also working to transform the electric utility industry from a strictly governed and monopolistic entity to one that is competitive, flexible and market-driven. The most significant of these propositions have been those that limit the monopoly powers of utilities. Only in areas where competition is counterproductive, such as in electricity distribution and transmission, will monopoly be retained. The government also has to separate the local distribution of electricity from generation and long-distance transmission to effectively restructure the power industry.
