From the supplier: The American Lung Assn. (ALA) conducted a formal review of its fund raising efforts in 1991. In response to a recommendation that it commission an outside review of its direct-mail database, the ALA established the Fund Raising Data Base Task Force, which consisted of ALA staff members and volunteers from CIRRUS Systems, AT&T and AARP. The task force eventually decided to replace the ALA's old database management mainframe system with a fully-relational, PC-based system, allowing ALA to save more than $400,000 and win an award in the process.
