From the supplier: Ernest Hemingway circumvents the difficulty of presenting another culture authentically by using second=level narration. The purely Spanish bullfighting, for example, is authoritatively explained by Pilar, one of his minor characters. Hemingway had her mention seven real-life bullfighters, who are quite familiar to her intratextual audience. However, to readers distanced in space and time, they are unknown, therefore their significance to the reading is lost. Biographies of these figures are then given to enrich the reading of the novel.
