From the supplier: Treatment for acute stroke with recombinant tissue plasminogen activator (rt-PA) brings with it risks and need for intensive care of the patient. The most common adverse reaction is bleeding, intracerebral hemorrhage. The role of nursing is crucial; nurses need to be familiar with treatments and monitoring protocols. In the first 24 hours the patient-to-nurse ratio should be no more than 2:1. The use of medications is unlike that for those who suffer acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Anticoagulants and antiplatelets are not used in the first 24 hours after rt-PA is first given and not before a repeat head CT scan.
