From the supplier: Chinese government initiatives have lowered the nation's population living in poverty to 10%, yet further efforts are challenged by agricultural resource limitations and primitive health conditions. The World Bank implemented its Southwest Poverty Reduction Project in 1995 in 35 poor counties, with a second program begun in 1997 for 26 mountain counties. Improvements in health, drinking water, education and other infrastructure activities have proven to be effective.
