From the supplier: The first known Italian-style opera performed in England was introduced early in the 18th century by Thomas Clayton. Clayton was the son of a noted violinist and traveled to Italy to learn the all-singing performance style. Clayton wrote the preface to 'The Passion of Sappho and Feast of Alexander,' performed in London in 1711.
