From the supplier: A proposed international agreement to regulate genetically modified organisms (GMOs) ended in an impasse on Feb 23 1999 because of a US-led lobby that saw the treaty as a hindrance to global trade. The proposed agreement took into consideration the safe handling, use and transfer of GMOs. Moreover, it considered GMOs' potential harmful effects on biological diversity. Despite being approved by 125 countries, the US, along with Australia, Argentina, Canada, Chile and Uruguay lobbied hard against the treaty, causing a stalemate in the negotiation process.
