From the author: Numerous studies have found that individuals' levels of job strains are consistently and strongly related to intentions to turnover. Organizations want to minimize the number of employees who leave their jobs; therefore, finding buffers of the strain-intent to turnover relationship is important for organizations. Although they are likely to have considerable impacts, few situational factors related to the social milieu have been examined. In this study we investigated two such variables, perceptions of politics and cooperation, as moderators of the strain-turnover relationship. We tested these relationships using a sample of 267 employees from a water management district and found support for both of the study's hypotheses that either lower levels of perceived politics or higher levels of cooperation will minimize turnover intentions resulting from job strains. These findings provide greater insight into the unique relationships between these variables and provide managers with specific information that can help them to retain valued employees. Strengths, limitations, directions for future research, and practical implications are offered.
