Description
This work attempts to follow in the tradition of Alexandre Benois who initiated a series under the name of Artistic Treasury of Russia in 1901. It was intended to be a photographic record of the great art treasures in all of the collections in Russia. There is an essay on Benois and his work by I. Prudnikov, Research Assistant of the Benois Family Museum. A longer essay on the V.P. Sukachev Museum by its Director, Ye. Zubriy, follows. This edition prepared under the auspices of P. Braslavsky-Benois and D. Vyshnegradsky, both of whom have signed the introductory page. The largest section of the book is devoted to 221 color photographs reproduced on coated stock which display the holdings of the museum from its primitive art artifacts to its most modern paintings. There is also a section of Far Eastern Art from the collection. Many of the images included in this volume are reproduced here for the first time. There is a bibliography, but it is only in Russian.
