What a relief to be transported from the crucial problems of today as handled in our hard-boiled fiction to a realistic novel on the troubles of the middle of last century (1800's) Many of those troubles were in their infancy, but were shortly to be graduated with bloody honors to full-fledged problems with world-wide recognition. They were the cause of two world wars.
