There was something on Mars that killed people. One expedition vanished without a trace. Out of the second, only one man came back, Johnny Wendt. His knowledge was decisive in the desperate east-west race for space. But Johnny didn't know what it was that made Mars a death trap.

Now Johnny is on the Moon, an unknowing carrier of death. Three people are coming for him: A woman determined to salvage him, succor him, love him; a general determined to dissect him, if necessary, to learn what was happening out there; and a congressman who sees Johnny as to path to ultimate power.
