Experimental physiologists use the word ''sacrifice'' to describe the putting to death of laboratory specimens. Drawing on observations of laboratory practices and on religious sacrifices described by sociologists, the argument is made that, beyond being a mere metaphor, ''sacrifice'' refers to a practice that activates a specific set of meanings. In this way, experimentation can be conducted while, at the same time, treating laboratory animals with respect.
