📖 Description
PREFACE: Looking at this atlas, I feel that I know the emotions of Joseph Nicollet on one particular day in 1839. A newcomer to the American West, the Frenchman was mapping lands in present-day South Dakota or the rise and saw an awesome panorama: the James River, joined by waters of four tributaries. An American Guide, it is reported, turned to Nicollet and proclaimed, :Well, come now, you want geography: Look! There's geography for you!"
And here, in turn, is geography for you - seen through the eyes of the natives and immigrants who hunted, farmed, clashed, settled, and migrated across it. This atlas is the offspring of a marriage of history to geography that promises to open fertile new ground to both fields. As such should be in libraries, and in the classrooms of every school in the nation.
