From the author: This essay argues that the Enlightenment challenges all traditional cultures--including the traditional Christian cultures of the West--not just non-Western societies. It also holds that Westerners and non-Westerners alike can treat the insights and achievements of the Enlightenment as an opportunity rather than a challenge: as "neutral moral space," in which we can work out our differences with one another peacefully. But, we should also all recognize the dangers of the Enlightenment. In this respect, too, Jews, Christians, Muslims, Hindus, and all other traditional cultures can find something they have in common.
