The Autocar Company started as the Pittsburgh Motor Car Company, founded in 1897 by Louis and John Clark. Two years later, the company moved to Ardmore, Pennsylvania and was renamed Autocar. The Autocar Company began truck production in 1907 and in 1909 several models of Autocar 2-ton shaft-driven forward-control trucks were given to the Army for trials during maneuvers.
