Notes on ACI318-71 Building Code Requirements with Design Applications

"This reference manual contains a group of papers presented at a Portland Cement Association staff seminar, "Building Code Requirements for Reinforced Concrete (ACI 318-71)." The purpose of this seminar was to acquaint the PCA structural engineering field staff and personnel of member companies and some allied associations with the provisions of this new edition of the American Concrete Institute Design Standard. The papers were prepared and presented by the seminar participants. A total of 26 topics were included: 25 are concerned directly with specific design provision of the '71 Code, the 26th is concerned with PCA computer program developments for the analysis and design of concrete structures. No attempt has been made to provide continuity between topics, each topic is complete in itself. The emphasis in this manual is on how to use the Code. More than 75 design application are included to illustrate how to apply the code provisions in design. Background information on how the provisions were developed is not emphasized. For such information the reader is referred to the Commentary on Building Code Requirements for Reinforced Concrete (ACI 318-71) and to Proceedings of the PCA-ACI Teleconference on ACI 318-71 building Code Requirements. The primary goal of publishing this manual is to assist the engineer and designer in proper application of the ACI 318-71 design standard. It is hoped that this material also will be a valuable aid to educators, architects, contractors, materials and products manufacturers, building code authorities, inspectors, and others involved in the design, construction, and regulation of concrete buildings."
