OPSIMATH: A Journey Toward Justice

The word opsimath is a combination of two Greek words, conveying the idea of “a late learner.” The title reflects the idea of what can happen when a troubled mind is given a reason to care, or when adults catch a vision for community and justice. The author weaves his unique and dramatic life story with questions and suggestions for society in an effort to understand justice. A repeated theme is that a fundamental need of human beings is a reason to care. This is what enables us to meet our potential, create our own destiny, and help others do the same.

The author is a Rhode Island native who dropped out of high school and had a devastatingly negative view of the world. A few significant relationships transformed his view of the world, inspiring him to complete high school. He then then traveled the world as an active duty U.S. Marine, earned an undergraduate degree, a law degree with honors, and now has a spouse and newborn child.
